Utilising Bodyweight Exercise as a Personal Trainer

As a personal trainer how can you utilise bodyweight exercise for training clients? [1]

Bodyweight exercise involves using your body as the resistance. It can improve both movement quality and performance by improving how someone can manipulate their body that aligns with their unique anthropometry.

Using bodyweight exercise can help us challenge a clients coordination, balance, flexibility, strength, speed, endurance and power. This is because bodyweight exercise allows us to move freely through the three planes of motion (sagittal, frontal, transverse). This is often why bodyweight exercise is viewed as a functional training modality that allows the body to move in concert.

Bodyweight training can:

• Be convenient - some people have limited access to training equipment, bodyweight exercise provides a good alternative

• Improve movement quality - prevent neuromuscular decline

• Diversify training

• Decrease cost

As a personal trainer you can utilise bodyweight exercise with clients in order to promote high quality functional movement patterns, improve traditional fitness markers and diversify training.
